Guide G.5 / Local SEO
What is local SEO?
Short answer: Local SEO is the work of helping your business appear in Google Search and Maps when people nearby look for what you offer. It focuses on your Google Business Profile, accurate business details, reviews, and a website that matches those details. Local SEO marketing is the same idea used as an ongoing marketing channel, not only a one-time setup.
Local SEO (local search engine optimization) is the practice of improving how a business shows up for searches that have a location intent, such as “plumber near me” or “dentist in Austin”. Local SEO marketing means treating that work as part of how you attract customers over time: keeping the profile accurate, earning genuine reviews, and keeping the website consistent.

What is local SEO marketing?
Local SEO marketing is local SEO used as a customer-acquisition channel. Instead of only “setting up” a listing once, you keep the Business Profile current, reply to reviews, add photos, and fix anything that confuses Google or customers. It sits beside other channels such as referrals and paid ads; it does not replace good service.
People often research you after they see reviews. 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 54% then check the business’s website after reading positive reviews (BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Local SEO marketing connects those steps: Maps and the profile bring the visit; the website and phone number complete it.

How does Google rank local businesses?
Google publishes three main factors for local results on Tips to improve your local ranking (opens in a new tab):
- Relevance — how well your profile matches the search.
- Distance — how far you are from the searcher.
- Prominence — how well known you are, including reviews and links from other sites.
Google also says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show in local results, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better organic local ranking. Improving local SEO means improving those signals, not buying a guaranteed position. For Maps-focused steps, see How to rank higher on Google Maps.

What does local SEO usually include?
For a typical US local business, local SEO work covers:
- Google Business Profile — claim or create it, verify it, set the right category, hours, services, photos and description (Add or claim your Business Profile (opens in a new tab)).
- NAP consistency — the same name, address and phone on the profile, website and other listings. Wrong details push customers away: 62% would avoid a business with incorrect information online (BrightLocal 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- Reviews — ask every customer for a genuine Google review without incentives or review gating (Google review tips (opens in a new tab)).
- Website — clear service and location language, fast pages on phones, matching contact details.
- Citations and mentions — accurate listings on directories that matter in your trade, without spammy duplicates.

How do you do local SEO as a small business owner?
A practical starting order:
- Search your business name on Google and Maps. If nothing shows, create or claim a Business Profile (opens in a new tab). If it does not appear for others, read Google Business Profile not showing.
- Verify the profile and fill every field that applies: category, hours, phone, website, service area or address, attributes.
- Make the website match the profile. Put contact info and hours where they are easy to find (85% of consumers consider those important when researching local businesses — BrightLocal Consumer Search Behavior 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Ask every completed customer for a Google review using the same link, and keep a private channel for complaints (How to get more Google reviews).
- Add real photos of your work and reply to reviews.
- Re-check monthly for wrong hours, closed holidays and outdated phone numbers.
You can do this yourself or hire help. Silent Academy Lover’s Google ranking and Business Profile help is available as a one-time job or a monthly service. We improve the signals Google describes; we do not promise a ranking.
G5.5
Do you need a website for local SEO?
A Google Business Profile can appear without a website, but many customers still look for a site after they read reviews (BrightLocal 2026, above). Only 40% of US SMBs in BrightLocal’s 2025 marketing survey said they have a dedicated website (SMB Marketing Report 2025 (opens in a new tab)). A simple, accurate site that matches your profile usually supports local SEO better than social posts alone. See What a local business website should include.
G5.6
Local SEO vs regular SEO
Regular SEO aims at Google results for queries that may not care where the searcher is (for example national product research). Local SEO aims at queries where place matters: near-me phrases, city names, and map results. Many local businesses need both a clear website and a strong Business Profile; local SEO is the part that ties those to nearby demand.
You do not need a huge content team to start. Completing the profile, matching your NAP, earning genuine reviews and publishing a fast, accurate site covers most of the first mile. Paid local ads are separate and labeled; they do not replace the organic signals Google lists.
G5.7
How long does local SEO take?
Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results, and that Business Profile edits can take up to three days to show (Find your business on Google (opens in a new tab)). After that, reviews and consistency build over weeks and months. Treat local SEO as maintenance, not a one-day switch.
If your profile is missing or hidden, fix visibility first with Google Business Profile not showing. If you already show but want stronger map results, use How to rank higher on Google Maps. For reviews done the allowed way, see How to get more Google reviews.
G5.8
What local SEO cannot promise
No honest provider can guarantee #1 in the map pack or first page forever. Distance changes with every searcher, and Google says you cannot pay for a better organic local ranking. Good local SEO improves completeness, accuracy, reviews and website clarity — the inputs Google documents.
